Scotia Bank Cup Tournamet Recap
The Contractors Rental Supply Midgets didn't come out well on the scoring end of the Scotia bank Cup tournament, however the team appears to have turned a corner as to developing an identity and some cohesion.Going 0-3 in the round robin portion and not advancing, was a difficult, but the team seemed to come together during the event and showed some real positive signs by the end.
Playing in a tough bracket which included all 3 teams ranked in the top 10 AA teams in the province was no easy feat. In the first game, Brantford lost 5-0 to the #7 ranked Streetsville Tigers the team trailed only 1-0 after the first and with only 1 more goal part way through the 2nd, it looked like we would still be in striking distance after 2 until a late PP goal by the Tigers put them up 3-0 with only 25 seconds left to play. Streetsville added 2 more in the third including another PP goal to close out the scoring. Ben Beechey was the team MVP for the game.
In the second game, the 99ers took on the 6th ranked Barrie Colts, again playing hard early but eventually slowing down, allowing 3 in the second and 4 in the third on their way to being shutout, this time 7-0. Brent Smolarz was the team MVP for the game
The lessons learned in their second game about work ethic and character carried over into the last as the CRS 99ers battled the 9th ranked TNT Tornados falling short by a score of 3-1. Brantford opened the scoring less than 2 minutes into the game as Jesse Stremler beat the Tornado's goalie after a scramble with the helpers going to Andrew Schunk, and Larry Hill. TNT tied it up on a PP less than 3 minutes later and followed it up with an even strength goal to take a 2-1 lead after 1. The Tornados scored the only goal of the second, another even strength marker, and the teams battled through a scoreless 3rd. Jesse Stremler was the team MVP for the game.
TNT and Barrie moved on from our pool, both winning their semi final games before meeting in the final with TNT knocking off Barrie by a 3-1 score to win the Scotia Bank Cup.
