BMHA Plans for COVID-19 Response Framework RED - CONTROL
Submitted By Rob Symons on Friday, December 18, 2020
UPDATE: See BMHA Programming Postponed During Southern Ontario Lockdown

For several weeks, Brantford Minor Hockey’s Executive have discussed and prepared for the scenario where Brantford and Brant County will be declared a RED – CONTROL zone within Ontario’s COVID-19 response framework. We have now received confirmation from the Brant County Health Unit that Brantford-Brant will move into the RED – CONTROL tier effective Monday, December 21, 2020 at 12:01 am.

We understand the critical importance of minor sports to our children, especially during COVID-19. We believe the following plan will help keep kids active, connected, and playing the sport they love.

How will this affect you?

Representative Teams – MD, A/AA, and AAA

- Rep teams will break into a Red and Black team with maximum 10 players per team.
- Subject to ice availability, we hope to provide each 10 player team with two, 1-hour ice-times per week. In most cases, the Red and Black teams will practice back to back or as close as ice scheduling permits.
- The on-ice sessions will be skill development only, with no games, battle drills, or small area games permitted.

Recreational Teams – House League

- For House League, we expect to cancel ice times currently scheduled on Sunday, December 27.
- On-ice sessions would restart on Saturday, January 9.
- Each House League team can expect one full-ice practice per weekend, being the only team on the ice.
- The on-ice sessions will be skill development only, with no games, battle drills, or small area games permitted.
- U21 (Midget-Juvenile) will shut down until Brantford-Brant returns to ORANGE – RESTRICT and game play can continue.

Toronto Maple Leafs First Shift

- Our opening Saturday will go ahead as planned on December 19 with Red and Green teams participating at their scheduled times.
- January 2 will be for Blue team only, with 10 participants at 4:20 pm and 10 participants at 5:40 pm.
- More communication re: First Shift plans with be sent out soon.

For both Representative and Recreation Teams, while in RED – CONTROL, only 10 skaters are permitted on the ice along with coaching staff. One parent / guardian per player will be permitted in designated seating. Where the player’s parent is a Coach, this will count as their “one parent / guardian per player”.

The plan as it is noted, is pending Local and Provincial guidelines which are subject to change at any time.

We understand that this is not the news any of us wants to hear. We have learned from associations that experienced RED – CONTROL before us and we are pleased that hockey programming will continue for over 94% of our membership. We hope to turn this number back to 100% very soon.

If you have questions, please reach out to your Team Rep, Head Coach, division Convenor, or appropriate Director.
