BMHA would like to address
some questions received from families inquiring on costs and expectations for
this hockey season. As we navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic there
are still some uncertainties as to the outlook of the remainder of the
season. This has made it more difficult to create an accurate pricing
model for the entire season. BMHA’s goal is to provide value for its
customers while ensuring we remain fiscally responsible to maintain
organizational stability operation into future years. We hope the below
information will provide some context as to how pricing was determined for this
season.
- BMHA’s goal as a Not-for-Profit Organization is to break-even every year; not to make profit.
- Player fees are built on estimated costs based on a fixed number of teams with a set number of players per team. If a player is sick, injured, or otherwise held out the cost per team doesn’t change.
- In prior years revenue from Summer 3-on-3 hockey and tournaments was used to offset the cost of operations for yearly hockey operations. Due to COVID-19, BMHA was unable to run Summer 3-on-3 and all tournaments have been cancelled therefore that revenue is lost.
- Each player’s fees cover ice time, referees, timekeepers, practice uniforms, ALLIANCE Hockey fees and insurance, coach and player development costs, and BMHA Administration. Much of this cost is allotted for ice time. Additional costs were incurred this year to help with COVID-19 screening.
- Player fees for season one and two were front loaded based on the cost of the entire season from September to March. Assumptions were made of being able to run competitive games during season two and three. To date, BMHA has not been granted permission by ALLIANCE Hockey to run competitive games against other associations. Fees for season three will be adjusted based on the best information available from ALLIANCE Hockey and Public Health with respect to programming that can be offered. The expectation is that fees will be declining from season to season.
- Direct ice time cost for rep teams (e.g. monthly rep team bills) are no longer offset by fundraising as they’ve been in previous years. This puts more of the cost on individual players.
